An international conference on “the Role of Advocacy for the Rule of Law in a Democratic Society”, which was organized by Sofia Bar Association in cooperation with the Institute for the Rule of Law (UIA-IROL) of the International Association of Lawyers, was held in Sofia on November 21-22, 2019. Istanbul Bar Association was represented by its two Board Members, Atty. Dr. Ayça Özok Ener and Atty. Selahattin Meriç, during the conference.
The rule of law as one of the basic principles of the democratic state, separation of powers, defense of the defense, inviolability and independence of the attorney as a guarantee for the right of defense, the rule of law as a mission of the bar association were the major topics discussed during the conference attended by the International Association of Lawyers, Sofia Bar Association, Bulgaria Supreme Bar Council along with lawyers and representatives of bar associations across Europe.
Atty. Dr. Ayça Özok Ener, Board Member of Istanbul Bar Association, intervened on “the Rule of Law as Mission of the Bar” during Session 2 on November. In her speech. Özok Ener indicated that existence of respectable and honorable lawyers-having a firm belief in the rule of law in Turkey, with an awareness of free representation of legal profession, is the ultimate guarantee of legal profession. She went on saying that these respectable lawyers are not only the safeguard for the problems of legal profession and lawyers, but also a guarantee for the solution of the problems of Turkey as well as for modern and civilized Turkey. Özok Ener concluded her words underlining that bar associations are the faithful defenders of intact democracy, human rights, the rule of law and a state governed by the rule of law.
Within the framework of the conference, a memorandum of understanding, (MoU) enabling exchange of information, organization of exchange programs for young lawyers and trainee lawyers and joint conferences for mutual interest, was signed between Istanbul and Sofia Bar Associations.
