REPRESENTATIVES FROM UKRAINIAN NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION AND ODESSA REGIONAL BAR COUNCIL PAY VISIT TO PRESIDENT DURAKOĞLU

Iurii Grygorenko, Secretary of Lawyers’ Rights Committee of Ukranian National Bar Association and Head of the Working Group on Public and International Relations of Lawyers’ Rights Committee of Odesaa Regional Bar Council, along with two other representatives from Ukranian National Bar Association paid a visit to the President of Istanbul Bar Association Atty. Mehmet Durakoğlu at 10.00 on Thursday, November 22, 2018. Vice-President of Istanbul Bar Association Atty. Nazan Moroğlu attended the meeting.

Problems and challenges of attorneyship profession, defense right violations, proposed amendments to the attorneyship code, independence of judiciary, public trust towards the judiciary, struggle of bar associations against the attacks towards attorneyship profession, conditions for admission to the legal profession, vitality of introducing attorneyship examination as a condition for admission to the profession were among the topics comparatively discussed during the meeting. Drawing the conclusion that Ukraine and Turkey are facing with very similar threats to the attorneyship profession, Durakoğlu said that defense right is being violated by the political power and this situation has become even worse after the failed coup in Turkey. Indicating that lawyers are often identified with their clients and there are some cetain nonprocedural practices in search of lawyers’ offices and domicile, Durakoğlu underlined that lawyers’ rights are violated. President Durakoğlu also mentioned that the large number of lawyers in Istanbul which has recently reached up to 42.000 –which is very close to the total number of lawyers in Ukraine (45.000)- is far beyond the actual need.

Durakoğlu and Grygorenko agreed to hold a joint meeting in Kiev, Ukraine in order to further discuss the violations of defense right both in Ukraine and Turkey.
