International Conference on “The Role and Independence of Lawyers : Comparative Perspectives” jointly organized by the Bar Association of Azerbaijan Republic, International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and the Council of Europe was held in Baku on November 15-16, 2018. Atty. Dr. Ayça Özok Ener, a member of the Board of Directors of Istanbul Bar Association, represented Istanbul Bar Association during the conference.
Aiming at providing an opportunity for the representatives of foreign bar associations and international experts having an expertise on the role and independence of lawyers to develop a comparative perspective, the conference facilitated discussions on the independence of attorneyship profession, code of conduct, competence of lawyers and vocational training. The vital importance of lawyers’ training in terms of the independence of attorneyship profession was emphasized during the conference.
Kindly hosted by the President of Azerbaijan Bar Association Anar Bagirov, the conference was attended by the President of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (UTBA) Atty. Prof. Dr. Metin Feyzioğlu, UTBA Vice-President Atty. Hüseyin Özbek ve Board Member of the Union of Lawyers' Organizations of Turkish-Speaking and Relative Countries (TÜRK – AV) Atty. Kürşat Karacabey, representatives of the Council of Europe and ICJ as well as 2nd Vice-President of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) Ranko Pelicaric and representatives from the bar associations in Belarus, France, Georgia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Kazakhistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.
Atty. Özok Ener took the floor in the last session on the legal and economic independence of bar associations. Addressing to the participants, Özok Ener rendered information on revenue stamps and Social Aid and Solidarity Fund (SYDF) of UTBA, both regulated under Article 27 ed.seq. of the Turkish Attorneyship Code.
